Who’s it for?

ACL Essex is for any adult looking to learn, develop or retrain from those wanting to explore creative hobbies, boost wellbeing or gain confidence, to Essex residents aiming to upskill, achieve qualifications such as GCSEs, or progress into a new job or career.

What is it?

A comprehensive adult learning service offering courses across a huge range of subjects, including Art, Beauty Therapy, Early Years, Digital Skills, English, Maths, Languages, Wellbeing, and more. ACL also delivers apprenticeships and funded training, with options for classroom learning, online study and flexible schedules to make learning accessible to everyone.

What’s required?

Simply choose a course or apprenticeship that suits your needs and enrol online or at a local ACL centre. Some courses are fee paying while many are fully funded or partially funded, especially for those without existing qualifications in English or Maths, or those looking to develop essential skills. Flexible learning options mean residents can learn at a pace that fits their lifestyle.

How does it work?

Residents browse the ACL course catalogue, select a subject area or qualification level, and sign up for a class, online course or apprenticeship. Learning can take place in centres across Essex or remotely, depending on the course chosen. Throughout their journey, learners receive support from ACL tutors and staff, have access to resources, and can progress through clear learning pathways that build confidence, skills and future opportunities.

Stories of progress

Don't just take our word for it, hear from the local individuals who are scaling faster and thinking bigger.

“It’s been fun, it’s been a good learning curve. Everyone is really nice here, the teachers are really good — Debbie is brilliant, she’s helped me out loads. I really like tiling. I would really like to work for the local council afterwards and repair houses, and I would like to be a multi trader.”

“The staff have been great honestly, and fun to work with. They’ve been really good at guiding, especially Dave or Lee. I really, really enjoyed the joinery part of carpentry too. That was really fun.”

“The whole course has been fascinating. Blender is an amazing piece of software with so many applications, from filmmaking to interior design. I now have a much better understanding of how to present myself and how to communicate what I do.”

“If I think back to 10 weeks ago and what I am capable of now — it’s astounding. Being able to use Blender will be incredibly useful going forward, and the course has been a welcome nudge to restart my business.”
